More Than Just a Workout...Nia and Your Upper Extremities

Prior to practicing Nia, I seldom was aware of my hands when working out.  I was aware of my arms when they hurt after bicep curls, etc., but mostly my upper extremities were things to condition and build muscle in.  I experienced pain in my right wrist, which prevented me from doing pushups or many yoga asanas due to pressure on my wrist.

In Nia, I have learned that my shoulders, arms, hands, and fingers can be used for many more functions – precision, expression, and healing.  Nia promotes all three, and there are 18 specific Nia moves to do just that.  I felt somewhat self-conscious when I first was given freedom during a song in a Nia class to express myself using my arms.  What?  No specific arm choreography?  I noticed, however, that when I took a risk and allowed myself to express emotion with my arms, hands, and fingers (yes! you can express emotion with all of them!), not only did I experience a better workout, but I experienced a sense of relief and peace as well.

Over time, because of Nia’s mindful use of the upper extremities, I have learned how to move in ways that not only condition, but heal the body as well.  My wrist has since healed, and I am unrestricted in my use of my right wrist.  I have learned how to rub my palms together to create healing warmth and energy and apply them to any areas of my body that need healing.  I have learned how to deliver a block or punch with power and ease. And I have learned how to move and release emotion by expressing it with my upper extremities.
